Five unexpected Things That Wil Drive You Crazy When You Renovate

I really enjoy reading articles about what people's different experiences are after having gone through the process of a renovation, particularly those who have continued to live in the house while the works take place.  I think this one from the Domain website is pretty accurate and number 4 is the one most commonly mentioned and surprises many people.

We are good at what we do, but don't just take our word for it...

  • Sorry it’s taken a little while to write you this letter of thanks, I’ve been busy moving into my new home! But, a letter of thanks is most certainly due, for all the wonderful work you did to help me get to the finish line of this project.

    First and foremost, I’d like to thank you for never giving up.

    We encountered many obstacles – one of the biggest being the council Planning Department. With the first drafter dropping out and the second drafter being completely unsupportive, I really needed that knowledgeable backing to push through and reach a design that made both the council and (most importantly) my budget happy.

    Next , you fielded builder’s quotes, and by this stage my home was a completely custom design. There’s no way I would have had the know-how to do that, and to the same standard that you did. You found me a great builder, with a good history and accompanied an inspection to see their previous work. You asked all of the questions I didn’t think of to ask.

    You background checked them, read through the contract and pointed out amendments required. When the builder and I had a misunderstanding right at the start, you were able to give me advice on which issues I was right or wrong on so that when I met with them, I could state my case clearly and the resolution was easy.

    Your inspections throughout this build were invaluable and picked up on little issues here and there (nothing huge thankfully, because the builder was great) including finding that not all of the windows had locks. That’s really important! And something I simply didn’t notice! Imagine if you weren’t in the picture and I’d completed handover without window locks!

    Overall, when it came to handover, I was able to sign the final documents and collect my brand-spanking new keys in complete confidence. I didn’t hesitate or worry that something was missed. I’m endlessly grateful for that peace of mind. I’d probably be a nervous wreck otherwise.

    When the obstacles got too much for others around me (eg. my drafters, my family) you didn’t give up. You kept searching, suggesting different methods and problem solving until we got there. And we got there!!
